Model Trains As A Hobby

When making a start in model railroading, you need to know about model train scales. Every model train made is made in one of the standard scales. The scale determines the size of the model train. The larger scales will of course tend to have more of the original details of the full size train. The scale means the size compared with the real train. The amount of space  you have available will be the main factor in deciding which scale you should purchase. Let’s take a look at some of the model train scales and minimum space needed.

Z Scale trains are 1:220, and they are really small. They are  the perfect size if you have very limited space. You can make the layout as large or small as you want it.

The next bigger size the N Scale, which is 1:160. N scale trains are quite popular and are great if you want to build a detailed layout. They are quite small, so you can fit N scale trains into a small space.

HO Scale model trains are 1:87 and this is the most popular scale with model railroaders. They can have plenty of detail and you can fit a good size layout into an modest sized space. HO scale trains blend well with any type of scenic layout and can really look great.

The O Scale is the next bigger size in 1:48 scale and this is very popular also. Lionel are well known for O scale model trains and have been producing them for many decades. These model trains are quite a lot bigger and require plenty of space for a nice layout. You really need a minimum 6' by 6' space for this scale and bigger is better. If your space is less than this, the H O scale train will be a better choice.

These are the main scales which are popular. You have to decide decide which scale is best for you. Even with relatively limited space, some modellers prefer O scale model trains. Because of their size and good detail O scale trains are really nice to look at.

The quality of model trains varies greatly so bigger scale trains are not necessarily more expensive than the smaller scales. O scale models tend to be higher in price but are a very nice size to work with. Model railroading is a rewarding and interesting hobby.
