Battery Toys

Battery operated toys reached their peak of popularity in the 1950s through the 1970s.Most of these toys are vehicles such as cars, trucks, military vehicles including tanks and jeeps. Character figures or animals including the ever popular bar tender, drum playing monkey and similar items.

Cartoon characters such as Popeye, Mickey mouse etc were very popular. Robots of various types, boats and ships, starships and spacemen. Battery operated toys are now very collectible, and their ever rising prices reflect this popularity.

In 1946 Japanese toy makers began replacing clockwork mechanisms with small electric motors which could  be used to simulate  human-animal motions and to drive vehicles. For the next 25 years Japan  dominated the market by making 95% of  all Battery Operated Toys.

Popeye Toys are very rare Battery Toys and can sell for thousands of dollars each if in good original condition.  Condition as a matter of fact is all important in valuing battery toys as with other collectible toys. A toy which is MIB (Mint In Box) will fetch many times what the same toy in average used condition without a box will sell for. The reason is of course that most toys have been played with and an MIB battery toy is quite a rarity. Popeye battery toys are one of the most rare and will sell for hundreds to thousands of dollars depending on the condition.

The manufacture of battery toys reached its peak in the late 60's and began to decline theeafter.  The main reasons were increasing labor costs in Japan and the imposition of safety restrictions. This resulted in many toy producers going out of business or moving to the manufacture of other merchandise. The thirty year or so period from about 1940 to the late 60's is considered by collectors to be the " Golden Era" of battery toys.
