GI Joe Figures

In the 1960s  after the phenomenal success of the Barbie doll for girls Hasbro decided to try to capture the boys market also. Anything known as a doll would not sell to boys so they came up with the generic term action figure to describe the new line of G.I.  Joe toys which they intended to produce. . "America's movable fighting man" was registered as a trademark by Hasbro, and was printed prominently on every  package of GI Joe material.

In the early stages Hasbro named the figures individually as "Rocky" (the marine/soldier), "Skip" (the sailor) and "Ace" (the pilot), Shortly however the name G.I. Joe was used for all of the figures. One of these first figures was sold at auction in 2003  for $200,000.

All G.I. Joes are trademarked on the right buttock to discourage copying of the figures. Hasbro  also copyrighted the scar on the right cheek and other minor marks. Early figures were trademarked, with "G.I. Joe™" until 1967 when the patent number 3,277,602 was issued and the figures were trademarked with this number. Figures carrying this marking were made in 1967.

Hasbro's G.I. Joe trademark has been used for two different lines of toys. The original products begun in 1964 were realistic action figures. This line of action figures was licensed to Palitoy in the UK and known there as Action Man. To cut burgeoning costs,  the line was relaunched  in 1982 in 3¾-inch size with matching playsets, vehicles, and a story involving the struggle between the G.I. Joe Team and the Cobra Command terrorist organisation which is trying to take over the Free World. While the American G.I.Joe figures evolved to become the Real American Hero series, Action Man changed correspondingly, renamed as Action Force and using the same molds. The G.I. Joe team  members were not superheroes but all were experts in use of such things as explosives, martial arts and weapons.

G.I. Joe figures in various editions continue in popularity to the present day and are probably second only to Barbie as a huge success in the toy makers world
